PLA conducts extensive military drills around Taiwan in show of strength

23rd May 2024 – (Beijing) The Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) initiated a comprehensive set of military exercises surrounding Taiwan early Thursday morning. Named Joint Sword-2024A, the drills commenced at 7.45am. and are set to continue through Friday.

Spanning an extensive area, the exercises are taking place in the Taiwan Straits and extend to the north, south, and east of the island. Additional areas around the smaller islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin are also included in the operational scope.

Li Xi, the spokesperson for the theatre command, outlined that the drills engage multiple branches of the military, including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force. The focus of Joint Sword-2024A lies in testing the joint sea-air combat readiness, achieving comprehensive control over the battlefield, and executing precise strikes on strategic targets. The operations are designed to enhance the real combat capabilities of the forces through integrated operations both inside and outside the island chain.

The spokesperson emphasized that the exercises are not only a test of military prowess but also serve a dual political purpose. They act as a significant deterrent against the separatist tendencies of the “Taiwan independence” forces and send a stark warning to external entities against interference and provocations.
