26th May 2024 – (Manila) The Philippine Army announced on Sunday that a suspected militant was killed in a clash with Philippine troops in Maguindanao del Sur province in the southern Philippines. The clash occurred early Saturday morning in a village in Datu Salibo town following a tip from local villagers regarding the militants’ presence in the area.

According to the Army report, the deceased individual was believed to be a member of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), a small armed group aligned with the Islamic State group. The clash lasted approximately five minutes before the suspected militant was neutralized by the troops. Upon securing the site, the troops discovered a 45-caliber pistol and explosives.

The BIFF has been implicated in various bombings and acts of violence in the Central Mindanao region in the southern Philippines. The group emerged after breaking away from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2014, following the latter’s decision to engage in peace negotiations with the government.
