Person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre rescued from suicide dies in public hospital today

23rd March 2023 – (Hong Kong)  A 42-year-old male remand person in custody at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre attempted suicide on 15th November, 2021. After being rescued, he was sent to a public hospital for treatment and was certified dead today.

 At around 7.30pm on 15th November, 2021, the person in custody attempted suicide by hanging with a bedsheet tied to a firefighting pipe inside the laundry workshop. Correctional officers immediately provided first aid treatment to the person in custody and sent him to a public hospital for treatment. After being rescued, he has all along remained unconscious and received in-patient treatment in the public hospital. His condition deteriorated today and he was certified dead at 6.18pm.

The case has been reported to the Police. A death inquest will be held by the Coroner’s Court.

The person in custody was remanded for the offence of trafficking in a dangerous drug in March 2020.
