30th May 2024 – (Amsterdam) At Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, a person lost their life after entering the running jet engine of a KLM passenger plane. The unfortunate event took place on Wednesday afternoon as the KL1341 flight was preparing for departure to Billund, Denmark. KLM, the airline in question, expressed its commitment to assisting passengers and employees who witnessed the incident, while also launching an investigation into the matter. The Netherlands’ military police has also initiated its own inquiry.

The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee force, in a statement posted on X, confirmed the safe removal of all passengers and employees from the flight. At this stage, the identity of the deceased remains unknown, and it is premature to determine whether the incident was accidental or intentional, according to a spokesperson from the Reuters news agency.

Several Dutch media outlets have speculated that the victim may have been an employee involved in aircraft pushback operations before takeoff. Images obtained by Dutch national broadcaster NOS reveal emergency services surrounding the passenger jet on the airport’s apron, where aircraft are typically parked. The aircraft involved in the incident was reportedly a short-haul Embraer jet, commonly used for KLM’s Cityhopper service, which operates flights between nearby European destinations.

Schiphol airport expressed its condolences to the relatives of the deceased and assured support for the passengers and colleagues who were present during the tragic event. Infrastructure Minister Mark Harbers described the incident as “terrible news” in a statement on X. Schiphol Airport, known as one of Europe’s busiest hub airports, garnered attention recently when rapper Nicki Minaj was arrested there.

According to the airport’s website, nearly 5.5 million passengers utilised Schiphol last month, highlighting its significant traffic volume. This unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with aviation operations, emphasising the importance of stringent safety measures. It echoes a similar incident from last year when a 27-year-old airport employee lost their life after being pulled into a Delta passenger plane engine in San Antonio, Texas.
