Pakistani man found guilty of murder by jury for kicking a 7-11 employee to death after stealing beer

2nd February 2023 – (Hong Kong) A Pakistani man who is a Hong Kong resident escaped after stealing beer from a 7-11 convenience store in Yuen Long three years ago. The 60-year-old employee pursued him but was pushed to the ground. The employee was later certified dead 2 days later.

The suspect denied murder charge. After 4 weeks of trial in the Court of First Instance of the High Court, the jury consisting of 5 men and 4 women deliberated for more than 4 hours. The defendant was unanimously found guilty of murder. Although the crime of murder must be sentenced to life imprisonment according to the law, the judge still decided to postpone the sentence together with the theft that the defendant had admitted before the trial. Defendant ISLAM Javed Iqbal, 30, was charged with murdering a then 61-year-old man, Tang Chung-keung, in Hong Kong on 30th December, 2019.

The married defendant was a sailor and a construction worker in the past. He was unemployed and living with his parents at the material time. The prosecution pointed out that the deceased was an assistant shopkeeper at a convenience store in Yuen Long. The incident was also captured by CCTV camera.
