5th September 2026 – (Hong Kong) Early this morning at 8.35am, police received a report regarding a precariously suspended decorative installation in the departure hall of Terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport. On arrival, officers found that a support wire for the hanging item, which was roughly 1.8 metres above ground, had snapped. There were no injuries and no immediate risk to public safety, and the relevant authorities have taken responsibility for follow-up action.
A spokesperson for the Airport Authority noted that shortly after 8.30am a suspended electronic display screen in the departure zone experienced a fault, prompting officials to cordon off the area immediately. The display’s safety system functioned as intended, preventing it from falling. Maintenance crews stabilised the installation further, and an extensive investigation is now under way to identify the cause and to consider potential enhancements to the safety system. The Airport Authority emphasised its concern over the incident and pledged a thorough inquiry.
Images shared online show the round display screen, which was projecting an ocean animation, hanging at an angle with a broken wire visible, as the surrounding section of the hall remained sealed off for safety precautions. Terminal 2’s new departure facilities only opened to the public on 27th May this year, as part of an initiative to boost efficiency and accommodate increasing passenger volumes during busy periods. The Airport Authority has confirmed that safety is the highest priority and all relevant measures are being reviewed.
