30th August 2026 – (Gyirong) A total of 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries remain unaccounted for following a mudslide that struck Gyirong Port, located on the border between China and Nepal in southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on 26th August. The announcement was made on Sunday at a press conference convened by the regional government’s information office, after foreign affairs, public security, culture and tourism, and emergency management authorities conducted joint searches and comprehensive checks of missing persons information.
Among those still unaccounted for are 104 individuals from Nepal, 49 from India, 33 from Latvia, 18 from the United States, 15 from Britain, six from Canada, six from Australia, four from South Africa, three each from Malaysia, Germany, and Russia, two each from Ireland, Estonia, France, the Netherlands, and New Zealand, and one each from Kazakhstan, Finland, Lithuania, Portugal, Ukraine, Spain, and Hungary. In the wake of the disaster, the embassies and consulates of the affected countries in China have been notified.
Authorities confirmed that, following a series of search operations, site inspections, and checks on people at the port, there are currently no foreign tourists stranded in Gyirong County.
