20th March 2023 – (New York) OpenAI, the company known for developing cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, has been hit by a major outage. Users around the world have reported issues with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and GPT-4, causing frustration for those who rely on the technology for various tasks.
The website health monitor Down Detector logged hundreds of reports from ChatGPT and GPT-4 users, who complained that OpenAI is down and the chatbot was not working. The status page on OpenAI’s website stated that there was an “outage on chat.openai.com”, noting several other incidents in recent days.
OpenAI has not yet provided any further information regarding the cause or expected duration of the outage. The Independent has contacted OpenAI for more information.
The latest version of OpenAI’s generative artificial intelligence tool, GPT-4, launched earlier this month. OpenAI claims that GPT-4 is able to handle “much more nuanced instructions” than its predecessor, ChatGPT.
Users have already found GPT-4 to be a powerful tool, capable of recreating classic video games “in seconds” and completing real-world tasks with the help of human workers. The advances made by OpenAI and other firms in recent years have led some artificial intelligence researchers to warn that AI has started to develop beyond an exponential rate.
