9th August 2022 – (Munich) Polish race walker Dawid Tomala, who won the men’s 50km gold at Tokyo 2020, confirmed on Tuesday that he will miss the European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany due to a knee injury.
“I gave up on the European Championships because I would like to finally take care of my health. My knee pain has been dragging on me all season long. I entered the season very late, so I didn’t get in shape at the World Championships. Preparations were postponed by five months, it’s a long time,” Tomala told Polish media in an interview.
“I went from doctor to doctor, we were looking for a diagnosis. We finally found that, but it was too late to build a form for the big event. This will not be done in a month,” he added.
The Pole emphasized that the next year’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary remains his main objective.
“I’m looking forward to the next season. Finally, I should have a clear head, I will be able to focus only on training and I want to fight for the highest goals,” he concluded.
