Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data warns against leak of personal information of top government officials in TELEGRAM chat group

19th July 2019 – (Hong Kong) After personal information of many top government officials including Chief Executive Carrie Lam, John Lee, Secretary for Security and Teresa Teng, Justice Chief etc were exposed in a Telegram chat group, Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data issued a statement this evening informing the group administrator to remove the content as the information leak may have infringed Data Privacy Law.

Personal details i.e. date of birth, mobile phone number, private email and social media accounts from other pro-Beijing lawmakers, Holden Chow, Starry Lee, Junius Ho, Luk Chung-hung etc were also leaked.

Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data expressed today that they received a total 315 complaints as at 5pm today. The administrator of the Telegram chat group has been notified to remove the content with immediately effect. Anyone whose private information has been exposed can lodge a complaint to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data.
