Off-duty police officer charged with criminal damage and disorderly conduct after drunken brawl with 9 men at Sham Shui Po restaurant

4th June 2023 – (Hong Kong) A 44-year-old off-duty Hong Kong police officer is facing charges over an alleged drunken brawl at a Sham Shui Po eatery in January.

Police said they received a report on 27th January at around 11.20pm about a fight in progress outside a restaurant on Fuk Wa Street in Sham Shui Po. Officers who responded found a man and a woman feeling unwell and took them to Caritas Medical Centre for checks.

After an investigation, police arrested five men aged between 42 to 44 years old between 6th to 21st February. They were arrested on suspicion of ” behaving in an intoxicated and disorderly manner in public”, “criminal damage” and “fighting in public”.

Among the arrestees was a 44-year-old man surnamed Kan who was an off-duty police officer. Police said he was suspected of smashing the restaurant’s glass door while drunk before getting into an altercation and fight with the other four arrestees and another five men.

The case has been handled by the West Kowloon Regional Crime Unit. After an investigation and legal advice was sought, the officer surnamed Kan was formally charged and has been suspended from duty.

police spokesman stressed that the force takes a serious view of officers’ conduct and discipline. Any officer found to have engaged in illegal behaviour will not be tolerated or condoned, and will be dealt with strictly.
