North Korea asserts sovereignty over space assets, decrying any attacks as an act of war

2nd December 2023 – (Pyongyang) In a statement released on Saturday, North Korea’s Ministry of National Defense has issued a stern warning, stating that any assault on the nation’s space assets would be construed as an act of war, as reported by the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

This cautionary statement follows recent remarks from a representative of the U.S. Space Command. The official alluded to the United States’ potential to mitigate the space operation capabilities of an adversary through a variety of “reversible and irreversible methods”. The comment was widely interpreted as a veiled threat towards North Korea’s reconnaissance satellite, “Malligyong-1”.

The Korean ministry’s statement emphasised that the reconnaissance satellite is an extension of North Korean territory, subject to its sovereignty. Consequently, it viewed the U.S. stance as a direct challenge to its sovereignty, equating it to a declaration of war.

“Any attempts to harm or disrupt the functionality of North Korea’s strategic assets, including our reconnaissance satellite, are not only an infringement on our territorial integrity but also a clear declaration of war,” the statement read.
