26th July 2025 – (Xiamen) The Chinese culinary reality show Chef of China, featuring Hong Kong star Nicholas Tse, is facing allegations of plagiarism due to its close resemblance to Netflix Korea’s popular programme Culinary Class Wars. The accusations have gained traction because of noticeable similarities in set design, competition format, and filming style, sparking widespread debate online.
The show, which premiered on 17 July, features 84 “Black Chefs” and 16 “White Chefs” competing in team-based cooking challenges. The judging panel includes Nicholas Tse, Zhang Yong, founder of the prestigious Xin Rong Ji restaurant chain, etc. Despite the star-studded lineup, critics have pointed out that the concept closely mirrors Culinary Class Wars, which became a major success in Korea for its innovative approach to culinary battles.
Netflix Korea has addressed the controversy, stating that it has not sold the programme format rights to this show and is currently considering further action. This statement has intensified criticism, with many social media users expressing embarrassment and disappointment over the perceived imitation.
While some viewers have defended the show, suggesting it may have obtained the necessary rights, the majority have criticised its lack of originality. The producers attempted to boost the show’s appeal by featuring other high-profile celebrities. However, the plagiarism claims have overshadowed its debut, with many noting that the similarities to the Korean programme are too significant to ignore.
Netflix Korea’s original Culinary Class Wars became a breakout hit in 2024, featuring amateur chefs competing against industry professionals, judged by prominent culinary figures. Its second season is expected to air later in 2025.
