22nd November 2022 – (Hong Kong) The MTR announced today (22nd) that its new “Q-Train” will be the first to provide passenger service on the Kwun Tong Line this Sunday (27th) before being deployed on Tsuen Wan Line, Hong Kong Island Line, and Tseung Kwan O Line in succession to gradually replace the “M-Train” that has been running for more than 40 years. Among them, the replacement of 13 old trains on the Kwun Tong Line is scheduled to be completed next year.
The MTR Corporation invested HK$6 billion to purchase 93 new 8-car trains to replace all of the first-generation trains now operating on the Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, Island and Tseung Kwan O lines.
These new trains are equipped with advanced operating systems and a number of new features in the passenger compartments including improved lighting systems, new dynamic route maps, double branched handrails and soft material introduced for the straphangers.
The number of seats on the new train is the same as that of the existing train, but the overall layout has been improved to enhance the ride experience, including widening the standing area next to the doors to facilitate boarding and alighting. More handrail devices are provided in the car, and the handrail rings of each car has been increased from existing 24 – 27 to 64.
