24th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) The U. K. government confirmed on Friday via an official gazette that a new demerit points system targeting taxi drivers will be implemented from 22nd September. The system is designed to uphold higher standards of service within the taxi industry, penalizing drivers for infractions such as fare overcharging, unnecessary detours, and refusing to accept passengers.

Under the newly announced regulations, taxi drivers will face deductions of between five and ten points for such violations. Accumulating 10 points within a two-year period will necessitate attendance at Driving Improvement Courses, funded by the drivers themselves. Furthermore, accumulating 15 points will result in a three-month suspension from driving.
