National Assembly Speaker in South Korea confirms meeting Pelosi on Thursday, same day she is rumoured to visit Taiwan

1st August 2022 – (Seoul) The South Korean Speaker’s Office announced on Monday (1st) that National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo will hold bilateral talks with U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday (4th) morning to discuss issues such as security, economic cooperation and climate change in the Indo-Pacific region. It was previously rumoured that Pelosi will visit Taiwan on Thursday.

According to Yonhap News Agency, after the meeting set for Thursday morning, the two speakers will hold a joint press conference before having lunch together, Kim’s office said. South Korea is one of the legs in Pelosi’s Asian tour that also includes stops in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.

Although Pelosi’s official statement did not list Taiwan in the itinerary, French media pointed out earlier that Pelosi plans to visit Taiwan from Clark Air Base in the Philippines on Thursday. She will meet with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen before flying to Japan on 5th August. Hence, it is unknown if Taiwan is still included in the tour.
