MTR train service unaffected today despite announcement by train drivers to go on strike

19th August 2019 – (Hong Kong) Around 700 MTR staff and drivers signed a joint petition on 14th August to protest against the close ties between police and MTR management which undermined the safety of the passengers.

Since the management has refused to reply to their demands, at least 200 MTR train drivers have threatened to go on strike today. The strike will take shape in two different forms i.e. 1) to go on leave and 2) to protest in silence by not drivingthe train.

At 9am today, Central, Admiralty, Kowloon Tong, Wan Chai and North Point MTR stations were still normal. According to the MTR train drivers who organised the strike, the announcement was only made yesterday evening. Many of them did not manage to decide in time whether to go on leave or protest in silence. They were in still discussion as to how they should proceed pending reply from the management.
