15th May 2022 – (Hong Kong) The cross-harbour section of the MTR East Rail Line officially opened to the public this morning. The maiden train departed from the Exhibition Centre Station to Sheung Shui this morning. Dr Tony Lee, Operations Director said that there were more than 2,000 passengers on board. During this period, the passengers even sang in the car. As of 5pm, the Exhibition Centre Station recorded over 8,700 passengers, and Hung Hom Station and Admiralty Station also had 38,600 and 65,500 visits respectively.
Lee also announced that the MTR will give away 100,000 one-way tickets, which citizens can log in to the MTR mobile app from 2pm on 31st May to collect them on a first-come, first-served basis. Lee said that after the cross-harbour section of the East Rail Line is opened to traffic, sufficient manpower will be reserved in the initial stage to ensure the smooth operation of the station, and an additional 400 staff will be deployed, including assisting passengers to familiarise themselves with the line transfer and use the new station facilities. Lee said that the train frequency can be increased to 2.7 minutes during peak hours, which can meet the needs of the flow of people on the first working day tomorrow (16th).
