4th February 2023 – (Hong Kong) There were a number of MTR train incidents last year, and the fines imposed on the company will be used this year to provide fare discounts to the public. MTR stated that according to preliminary information, there were 8 service delays of 31 minutes or more last year and it was initially confirmed that they were caused by factors within the control of MTR. The amount allocated for discounts was HK$65.5 million, the amount has soared more than three times year-on-year, which means that the delay time of train services being disrupted was longer than that of the previous year.
The fine, together MTR’s business profits, will be rebated to passengers in the form of a 3% fare discount per journey when the fare adjustment is implemented in June this year, and will be maintained for at least 6 months. According to the service performance arrangement, for each incident with a delay of 31 minutes or more, if the cause is related to the MTR, the MTR will be required to submit a fine according to the length of the delay of each incident.
