One of the deceased victims, Lau Kai-hei.

5th June 2023 – (Hong Kong) Last Friday, June 2nd, a bloody murder occurred at the Plaza Hollywood  in Diamond Hill. The police have arrested a 39-year-old man who is suspected of murdering two close friends, Fong Hiu-tung (26) and Lau Kai-hei (22). Yesterday, the suspect was charged with two counts of murder and is set to appear in court this morning.

On the day of the incident, a man, later identified as the suspect, purchased a 12-inch knife from a shop on the second floor of the shopping center. He then roamed around the third floor before attacking the two women in front of a shop. Both victims were stabbed in the chest and neck and were rushed to United Christian Hospital. Unfortunately, they both succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced dead at 6.06pm and 6.47pm respectively. Lau Kai-hei’s mother expressed her gratitude to the courageous citizens who tried to help her daughter during the attack.

Lau Kai-hei lived with her mother, stepfather, and stepsister in Tseung Kwan O’s King Lam Estate before moving to Lung Mei Village with Fong. Her mother, who was interviewed by the media yesterday, said that she received a message about the incident and initially thought it was a scam. However, upon confirming the news, she rushed to the hospital and was devastated by the loss of her daughter. Lau’s mother hopes to clarify some rumours that have been circulating online about the case, as they have caused great harm to her family. She emphasised that her daughter and Fong Hiu-tung were ‘close friends’, and the false information has only added to their grief.

The incident has shocked and frightened many people in the community, but it has also inspired acts of heroism. One such hero is Fai, a chef who used two chairs to stop the assailant from attacking anyone else. He recounted the incident to the media and expressed his gratitude to the citizens who helped during the attack. However, he also cautioned against putting oneself in danger in similar situations.

The suspect’s family resides in a public housing estate in Tsz Wan Shan, and the media attempted to interview them yesterday. However, the suspect’s father declined to speak to the media and shut the door upon realising their identities.
