30th May 2023 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong is set to experience very hot weather in the coming days, with the Hong Kong Observatory issuing a warning to the public. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 34°C today and tomorrow, and there may be isolated showers later in the day. To prevent heat stroke, the public is advised to avoid prolonged activities outdoors and to wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat if necessary. It is also important to stay hydrated and avoid beverages containing caffeine or alcohol.

The hot weather is being caused by Tropical Cyclone Mawar, which is gradually turning northwards and moving slowly in the next couple of days. It is expected to linger around seas east of Taiwan and then move in the general direction of the Ryukyu Islands. Under the influence of its outer subsiding air, it will be persistently very hot over the coast of southern China in the next couple of days. Showers and thunderstorms triggered by high temperatures will affect the region. A trough of low pressure is expected to bring a few showers to the coast of Guangdong during the weekend.

Despite the hot weather, an anticyclone aloft is bringing generally fine weather to southern China. Severe Typhoon Mawar has weakened into a typhoon, and its outer subsiding air is affecting the coast of southeastern China.
