Max Verstappen claims pole position for Austrian Grand Prix sprint race

28th June 2024 – (Spielberg) During a qualifying session at the Red Bull Ring, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix sprint race on Friday. The triple Formula One world champion clocked an impressive lap time of one minute 04.686 seconds on his team’s home circuit, eliciting a thunderous response from the crowd. Lando Norris of McLaren came in just 0.093 seconds behind Verstappen, securing second place on the grid, followed by Oscar Piastri in another McLaren.

Verstappen, known for his passionate fanbase that adorns the stands in vibrant orange, expressed his delight at claiming the top spot in front of his supportive home crowd. He remarked, “It’s great to be first here in front of, basically, my home fans and my home Grand Prix. It’s been a good day so far.”

The second row will feature George Russell of Mercedes alongside Piastri, while Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes will start together on the third row. Sergio Perez of Mexico will commence the race from seventh place, with Esteban Ocon of Alpine and Pierre Gasly of AlphaTauri following closely behind. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, unfortunately, failed to set a time in the final phase and will start from the tenth position.
