23rd May 2023 – (Hong Kong) A man sparked fear and panic at United Christian Hospital (UCH) after he wielded a pair of scissors and attempted to harm people in the emergency room. The incident occurred around 11pm yesterday when the man suddenly became agitated and started waving the scissors around. Thankfully, police officers and hospital staff were able to subdue him before anyone was hurt, but many patients waiting for treatment had to be evacuated from the area.
According to reports, the man, surnamed Mak, is 64 years old and has a history of mental illness. Prior to the incident, he was found lying on the street and was brought to the hospital after being bound due to his erratic behavior. However, it is believed that this may have caused him to become even more agitated, leading him to spit around and cut his bindings with the scissors.
The police have classified the incident as one involving a person suspected of having a mental disorder and have not made any arrests. However, a security guard was injured in the process and refused medical treatment.
Video footage of the incident quickly went viral on social media, showing at least two law enforcement officers and around 10 hospital staff members working together to subdue the man. In the video, a witness can be heard shouting, “Stay back! Police are here! Don’t worry, don’t worry, don’t worry, Mommy!” while a woman’s voice nearby expresses concern and urges people not to go near the scene.
