Man sentenced to 7 months and 15 days in jail for risking the infection of others during his COVID-19 positive period by going out to restaurants and other places

23rd March 2023 – (Hong Kong) A 41-year-old male employee of a fruit shop has been sentenced to 7 months and 15 days in jail for risking the infection of others during his COVID-19 positive period by going out to restaurants including Yoshinoya in TST and Maxim’s MXand taking the MTR between 24th and 28th February 2022. He also visited Wellcome supermarket and ParkNShop branch.

He denied 12 charges but the judge found 9 of them to be true and called him selfish. The defendant claimed he had not received his test result nor quarantine order, and that the government did not accept rapid test results at the time, so he thought he had not violated any laws. The judge criticised his behaviour and said it may have undermined the government’s efforts in fighting the pandemic.
