The incident, which took place on February 28th, grabbed the attention of netizens who shared the footage widely. Witnessed by fellow tourists, the video captured the moment a man, positioned at the observation deck near the mountain peak, took a decisive leap without showing any signs of hesitation. Gasps of disbelief and fear can be heard from the onlookers as the man descended.

The location shown in the video appears to be the observation deck, which some speculate is associated with Tianmen Mountain’s wingsuit flying championship. However, upon closer examination, it is evident that the individual involved was not wearing any wingsuit or protective gear, only carrying a backpack.

The response from the authorities has been limited thus far. The management office of Tianmen Mountain National Park claimed to have no knowledge of the incident when contacted by Xionglan News. However, officials from the propaganda department of Yongding District Committee in Zhangjiajie confirmed on February 29th that the incident was being addressed by relevant departments. A specialized task force has been established, though specific details regarding the progress of the investigation remain undisclosed.

This unfortunate event is not the first of its kind to occur in the area. In 2023, Tianmen Mountain witnessed two separate incidents of cliff jumping, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. These incidents sparked widespread public concern and prompted discussions on the need for preventive measures.

On 7th April, 2023, a notification was issued by the Yongding District, Zhangjiajie, reporting that on 4th April, around 1.30pm, four individuals from other provinces attempted to jump off Tianmen Mountain, with one female being successfully stopped. Investigation by the police revealed that three of the males had jumped to their deaths, while the female had ingested poison before leaping, ultimately succumbing to the failed emergency medical treatment. Authorities concluded that all four cases were suicides, ruling out any criminal or external factors.

Another tragic incident occurred on the morning of 22nd July, 2023, when a 19-year-old student fell off a cliff while taking photographs at Tianmen Mountain National Park. On the evening of 26th July, Zhangjiajie officials confirmed the student’s death, clarifying that it was not an accidental fall but a deliberate act of suicide, as the student intentionally climbed over safety barriers before leaping.
