16th September 2020 – (Hong Kong) At about 6pm today (16th), the police received a report from a staff member of a jewellery shop on the ground floor of Hankow Centre, 1E, Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui that a male air-conditioning technician surnamed Yuan (52 years old) was suspected of being electrocuted while inspecting the air-conditioning pump in the attic of the site. After the paramedics arrived, they immediately sent the injured man to the hospital, but hee died in the end. The family of the male contractor received the police notice and rushed to the hospital.As for the cause of the electric shock, the police are still investigating.
The Labour Department (LD) immediately deployed staff to the scene upon receiving a report of the accident, and is now conducting an investigation to look into its cause.
The LDspokesman added, “We will complete investigation as soon as possible to identify the cause of the accident, ascertain the liability of the duty holders and recommend improvement measures. We will take actions pursuant to the law if there is any violation of the work safety legislation.”
The LD will issue a Work Safety Alert through its website and email, giving a brief account of the accident concerned to duty holders, workers’ unions, professional bodies of safety practitioners and others, and reminding the industry of the importance of following safety precautionary measures to prevent the recurrence of similar accidents.
