2nd December 2023 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong is hosting the Mainland Higher Education Expo 2024/25, a two-day event jointly organised by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Education Bureau (EDB), providing valuable information to students and parents interested in pursuing further studies in Mainland China. The Expo, taking place on 2nd and 3rd December, aims to familiarise attendees with the Scheme for Admission of Hong Kong Students to Mainland Higher Education Institutions (Admission Scheme) for the upcoming academic year and other pertinent details.
During the opening ceremony, Dr Choi Yuk-lin, the Secretary for Education, highlighted the successful track record of the Admission Scheme. Since its inception in the 2012/13 academic year, over 42,000 students from Hong Kong have applied to Mainland universities through the Scheme. The number of participating institutions under the Scheme will increase to 138 for the 2024/25 academic year, offering students a greater range of choices that cater to their specific preferences.
Dr Choi emphasized that the MoE prioritizes the nurturing of Hong Kong youths. Each year, a sizable delegation of representatives from Mainland higher education institutions visits Hong Kong to participate in the Mainland Higher Education Expo. Dr Choi encouraged aspiring students to seize the opportunity and pursue their dreams by applying to their preferred Mainland institutions and programs through the Admission Scheme. She noted that this endeavor would broaden their horizons, deepen their understanding of the country’s overall development, and enable them to embrace the limitless opportunities presented by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area development.
To support Hong Kong students pursuing undergraduate studies on the Mainland, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government established the Mainland University Study Subsidy Scheme in 2014. The scheme comprises means-tested and non-means-tested subsidies, with the level of support increasing since the 2022/23 academic year to better assist Hong Kong students studying on the Mainland.
The Mainland Higher Education Expo is open to the public from 10am to 7pm today and from 10am to 6pm tomorrow at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Admission to the Expo is free. Approximately 130 Mainland higher education institutions participating in the Admission Scheme for the 2024/25 academic year will set up exhibition booths, providing comprehensive information on faculties, subjects, admission criteria, and the number of admission places available. Representatives from the Ministry of Education will also offer briefings on application procedures and admission arrangements under the Admission Scheme.
