3rd August 2025 – (New York) A minor earthquake jolted the New York metropolitan area on Saturday evening, registering a magnitude of 3.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre of the quake was in Hasbrouck Heights, a New Jersey suburb located less than 8 miles (13km) west of Central Park, at a depth of approximately 6.2 miles (10km).
Residents in New York’s Brooklyn borough described the tremor as a brief swaying sensation, lasting only a moment. Although the earthquake was not powerful enough to cause damage, reports quickly flooded social media with individuals sharing their experiences. Even the Empire State Building’s official X platform account reassured followers with a post saying, “I AM FINE.”
Compared to a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in 2024 near Tewksbury, New Jersey, the recent 3.0 quake was notably milder. Such mild tremors are infrequent in the northeastern United States.
New York City’s emergency management officials stated that there were no immediate reports of significant effects from the earthquake.
