16th May 2024 – (Los Angeles) Magician David Copperfield has been accused of sexual misconduct by 16 women, with some allegations involving minors, according to a detailed report by The Guardian. The accusations span from the late 1980s to 2014, casting a shadow over the illustrious career of the American illusionist.

Three of the women allege that Copperfield drugged them before engaging in non-consensual sexual activities. Additionally, four other complainants claim that during live performances, Copperfield either groped them or coerced them into touching him inappropriately.

One significant allegation comes from a woman who met Copperfield in 1991 at the age of 15. She told The Guardian that while their sexual relationship began consensually when she turned 18, she now believes she was groomed by the magician from a young age. Copperfield’s legal team has acknowledged this relationship but denies any allegations of grooming.

In response to these claims, a representative for Copperfield vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as “false and scurrilous” and asserting they misrepresent who Copperfield truly is. The statement highlighted Copperfield’s efforts to support women, especially against powerful predators, and critiqued the reliability of the allegations.

Furthermore, Copperfield’s legal team emphasized that past investigations by U.S. law enforcement into similar claims have not resulted in any charges, suggesting an absence of substantive evidence.

This is not the first time Copperfield has faced such allegations. In 2018, he preemptively denied historical claims of sexual misconduct amidst the rising #MeToo movement, lamenting on social media about the impact of unproven accusations on his reputation.
