Local expert urges govt to conduct lockdown testing for all 11 remaining blocks at Kwai Chung Estate, social distancing measures should be tightened further

22nd December 2022 – (Hong Kong) The number of confirmed Omicron cases in Kwai Chung Estate has increased exponentially. The Hong Kong government announced today (22nd) that in addition to Yat Kwai House, Ying Kwai House has also been placed under a 5-day lockdown. Another 4 buildings were also subject to restrictive-testing declaration this evening.

However, residents in the 11 buildings are only required to be be tested compulsorily. Leung Chi-chiu, a specialist in the Department of Respiratory Medicine, believes that the outbreak in Kwai Chung Estate was not caused by a single super-spreader. He thinks that there are signs of large-scale spread outbreak brewed.

It is expected that the cases have been passed down for three to four generations. he suggested to the government to implement lockdown testing in the remaining 11 buildings. If cases are detected in any of the buildings, the lockdown testing should be extended.

Leung explained that due to the high density of transmission sources in the estate and the fact that many infected cleaners and security guards work in multiple buildings at the same time, there is reason to believe that apart from Yat Kwai House and Ying Kwai House, there are already existing cluster outbreaks in other blocks.

He is also worried that the residents of Yat Kwai House have been roaming everywhere earlier, hence, the risk of a community outbreak is increasing. He believes that in addition to tracking the movements of individual patients, social distancing measures should be tightened immediately to further reduce the flow of people in the community and prevent the epidemic from getting out of control in the short term.
