19th March 2024 – (Philadelphia) Inter Miami CF’s marquee player, Lionel Messi, will not feature in the upcoming international fixtures for Argentina, as confirmed by the country’s football federation on Monday. The celebrated forward was sidelined for his club’s recent triumph and will also be absent from Argentina’s squad for the imminent friendlies on U.S. soil against El Salvador in Philadelphia on 22nd March, and Costa Rica in Los Angeles on 26th March.

The Argentine federation’s tweet detailed the injury: “Argentina captain Lionel Messi won’t be able to join the call-up for the #USA friendlies due to a small right hamstring injury.” This setback comes as Argentina prepares to defend their Copa América title in a few months, with the 2026 World Cup in North America also on the horizon.

Messi’s latest performance in Major League Soccer was on 13th March, leading Inter Miami to victory over Nashville SC. His club is preparing for an upcoming quarterfinal in the Concacaf Champions Cup against CF Monterrey, with the first leg scheduled for 3rd April at Chase Stadium.

Inter Miami, currently at the top of the Supporters’ Shield standings, looks to maintain their strong start to the season as they face the New York Red Bulls in their next fixture.
