7th April 2024 – (Washington) In a highly anticipated Major League Soccer (MLS) clash, Lionel Messi made a triumphant return from injury, scoring a crucial goal that helped Inter Miami secure a 2-2 draw against Colorado. The match, held at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, showcased Messi’s undeniable influence on the game.

Having been sidelined with a hamstring strain since March 13, Messi entered the field as a substitute at halftime. His impact was immediate and profound. Just before the break, Colorado took the lead with a penalty converted by Rafael Navarro. However, Messi quickly turned the tide, equalizing for Inter Miami just 12 minutes into the second half. A first-time strike from Messi ricocheted off the post and found the back of the net, courtesy of Franco Negri’s cross.

Not content with just levelling the score, Messi went on to orchestrate Inter Miami’s go-ahead goal. Displaying his impeccable passing skills, he delivered a perfectly weighted ball to David Ruiz, who then set up Leonardo Afonso to unleash a powerful shot from eight yards, giving Inter Miami the lead.

Unfortunately, Inter Miami couldn’t maintain their advantage until the final whistle. Colorado’s Cole Bassett calmly finished a counterattack in the 88th minute, levelling the score once again.

Reflecting on Messi’s performance, Inter Miami manager Gerardo Martino acknowledged the immense impact the Argentine superstar had on the team, the opposition, and the fans. He expressed satisfaction that Messi felt comfortable and free from injury, emphasising the importance of his well-being.

Despite the positive aspects of the match, Martino expressed disappointment in letting two points slip away. Inter Miami’s continued errors have proven costly, hindering their ability to secure victories.

Messi’s goal against Colorado marked his fifth goal in as many games across various competitions for Inter Miami this season. The draw leaves Inter Miami in third place in the Eastern Conference standings, accumulating 12 points from eight matches. Meanwhile, Colorado currently sits ninth in the Western Conference with nine points.
