Lionel Messi confident in Argentina’s chances to win Copa America, expects tough competition

8th June 2024 – (Buenos Aires) Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, has boldly declared the Albiceleste as frontrunners to clinch victory in the upcoming Copa America, set to take place in the United States. As the reigning champions of both the World Cup and Copa America, Argentina will embark on their title defence by facing Canada on 20th June, followed by matches against Chile and Peru during the group stage.

In an interview with Argentine news service Infobae, Messi expressed his belief that Argentina always carries the favourite status. Even prior to their recent period of success, Argentina, along with Brazil, has consistently been considered strong contenders. Messi emphasized that this Copa America will be no exception to their status as favourites.

The 36-year-old forward from Inter Miami further acknowledged the overall strength of South American teams. He pointed out Uruguay, Colombia, and Ecuador as formidable opponents. Messi anticipates that every match will be a tough contest, making the tournament highly competitive and evenly balanced.

To fine-tune their preparations for the oldest continental football competition in the world, Argentina will engage in friendly matches against Ecuador and Guatemala on 9th and 14th June, respectively.
