25th October 2019 – (Hong Kong) A local game developer has created a new ‘Liberate Hong Kong’ game based on Hong Kong protests. Players will assume the role of frontline protesters and engage in clashes with police similar to the actual protests in Hong Kong. The game is currently being reviewed by Steam, a video game digital distribution service platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is targeted to be available for download in November.
It was launched in September 2003 as a way for Valve to provide automatic updates for their games, but eventually expanded to include games from third-party publishers. If Steam eventually refuses to list the game on their platform, the local developer may create a link for direct download of the game.
The Steam platform is the largest digital distribution platform for PC gaming, estimated in 2013 to have 75% of the market space. By 2017, users purchasing games through Steam totalled roughly US$4.3 billion, representing at least 18% of global PC game sales. By 2019, the service had over a billion registered accounts with 90 million monthly active users.
