LCSD unveils spectacular Lunar New Year Lantern Carnivals from 20th to 25th February

20th February 2024 – (Hong Kong) Hong Kong’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) is set to delight the public with a series of vibrant Lunar New Year Lantern Carnivals taking place at various locations in the city. From 20th to 25th February, residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the festive spirit at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza, Hong Kong Velodrome Park, Tin Shui Wai Park, and Ginza Square. The carnivals, held alongside the recently launched green dragon lantern display at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza, promise to be a celebration of spring’s boundless energy.

The highlight of the Lantern Carnivals will be the stunning lantern displays, each with its own unique theme. Spectators will have the opportunity to admire these magnificent lanterns from 6pm to 11pm every day during the event. Additionally, Gala Nights have been scheduled on specific dates, offering a wide array of activities that showcase traditional Chinese elements and youthful vitality.

Attendees can look forward to a diverse range of performances and entertainment. The Hubei Provincial Performing Arts Group will captivate the audience with ethnic dances, acrobatics, and magical performances. Talented local artists and district organizations will take the stage on Youth Night, treating the crowd to dance shows, Chinese music, pop music, and band performances. As part of the festivities, the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) Pop Up truck will transform into a mobile studio, engaging audiences with Pop Up Live sessions.

  1. Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza
    • Dates: 20th to 25th February
    • Theme: “Welcoming Spring with the Dragon Treasure”
    • Highlights: A series of celebratory lanterns, including a dragon lantern weaving through blooming flowers on water pools, symbolizing the vibrant atmosphere of spring.
    • Lantern riddles: 23rd February (7.30pm to 9.30pm)
    • Youth Night: 24th February (7.30pm to 10pm) – Featuring dance performances, Chinese music, pop music, and band sound by young local artists and district organizations.
    • Gala Night: 24th February (7.30pm to 10pm) – Showcasing ethnic dance and acrobatics by the Hubei Provincial Performing Arts Group, along with music and dance performances by RTHK Pop Up Live.
  2. Hong Kong Velodrome Park
    • Dates: 20th to 25th February
    • Theme: “The Fantasy Playground”
    • Highlights: A collection of lanterns characterized by childlike innocence and vibrant colours, appealing to both adults and children.
    • Lantern riddles: 23rd February (7.30 pm to 10pm)
    • Gala Night: 24th February (7:30 pm to 10 pm) – Featuring ethnic dance and acrobatics by the Hubei Provincial Performing Arts Group, pop music, unicorn dance performances, and taster sessions.
  3. Tin Shui Wai Park and Ginza Square
    • Dates: 20th to 25th February
    • Theme: “A Festive Celebration of Love and Joy in the Year of the Dragon”
    • Highlights: A grand dragon and phoenix revolving lantern, accompanied by adorable animal lanterns, symbolizing good wishes for the New Year.
    • Lantern riddles: 25th February (7.30pm to 10pm)
    • Gala Night: 25th February (7.30 pm to 10pm) – Showcasing ethnic dance and acrobatics by the Hubei Provincial Performing Arts Group, along with fancy rope skipping, street dance performances, and pop music and dance shows.
