Large groups of expats spotted drinking on Sai Street in Sheung Wan without masks

28th January 2022 – (Hong Kong) Due to large-scale outbreaks in the community at any time, the Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, held a press conference yesterday saying that the government could not relax and fine-tune social distancing measures. Therefore, it announced that all measures will be extended for two weeks until the 17th of next month, and large-scale and crowd gatherings will continue to be suspended.

Meanwhile, restaurants will continue to suspend evening dine-in services after 6pm and as of 8.30pm today, many foreign expats were seen gathering in groups of more than 4 near Sai Street Sheung Wan to drink without masks.

There were police officers who walked past some of them but no action was taken because they quickly split into smaller groups to avoid being fined. Some residents in the area complained of the noise they were making and the potential risks they may post by gathering in defiance of the anti-epidemic measures during this critical period.
