28th May 2023 – (Kyiv) Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, was hit by a “massive” drone attack on Sunday (May 28), leaving one person dead and causing widespread damage. According to the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, a 41-year-old man died, and a 35-year-old woman was hospitalised after the attack. The wreckage of the drones was found near a petrol station, and a fire broke out at a company premises in the Holosiivskyi district.

Kyiv’s air defences successfully shot down over 20 drones that were reportedly headed for the city. Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters, warning that the attack was significant.

This attack comes amid increased tensions between Ukraine and Russia, with Russian forces reportedly targeting Kyiv throughout May. The head of the local civil and military administration, Serhii Popko, has reported 13 attacks during the month. In recent weeks, reports of drone attacks in Russia have also increased, usually in regions bordering Ukraine.

Regional authorities reported that two people were killed on Saturday by shelling in those areas. Moscow has blamed Kyiv and its Western supporters for the escalating number of attacks and sabotage operations, including on the Kremlin. However, Ukraine has denied involvement.
