Kitchee SC to host Atlético Madrid in high-profile friendly, press conference scheduled for next Thursday

21st June 2024 – (Hong Kong) Kitchee Sports Club has announced a forthcoming friendly match with Spanish football giants Atlético Madrid. This event, scheduled for early August, marks a notable return of international clubs to Hong Kong following the subdued appearance of Lionel Messi during the Inter Miami CF game earlier this February.

This match is part of a broader pre-season tour for Atlético, which includes stops in mainland China and Sweden, as reported by Spanish media last month. The tour aims to prepare the team for the upcoming season, with the Hong Kong leg providing a vital test against top-tier international competition.

Kitchee SC revealed plans for a press conference on 27th June to discuss the details of the “EDPS 50th Anniversary Presentation: Kitchee vs. Atlético Madrid.” Prominent figures expected at the event include Kitchee’s President Ken Ng, Commissioner for Sports in the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau Sam Wong Tak-sum, and the President of the Hong Kong Football Association, Eric Fok.

Atlético’s squad features stars like the French forward Antoine Griezmann, who, despite a lackluster stint at Barcelona, returned to Atlético and regained form. Midfielder Rodrigo de Paul, celebrated for his role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, is also a key player for the team. Atlético’s captain, Jorge Resurrección Merodio (Koke), renowned for his loyalty to the club, is another highlight, having been with Atlético for 24 years.

However, the full squad’s participation remains uncertain. The match is scheduled shortly after the UEFA European Championship, and overlaps with the Paris Olympics, where some players, including Griezmann, have expressed interest in participating. This could affect their availability for the friendly in Hong Kong.

Kitchee has a history of arranging high-profile games, having hosted Manchester City in 2019 and Tottenham Hotspur in 2017. The club has consistently demonstrated its capability to organise events that attract global football stars, enhancing the local sports culture and providing fans with unforgettable experiences.
