29th May 2025 – (Hong Kong) World number one Jannik Sinner secured a decisive victory over French player Richard Gasquet at the French Open, marking Gasquet’s retirement with a resounding 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 triumph in the clash of generations on Thursday, effortlessly advancing to the third round. This encounter in Paris marked the second consecutive year that the 23-year-old Sinner triumphed over the local hero Gasquet, who made the decision to conclude his illustrious career spanning over two decades and boasting 16 tour-level singles titles after bidding farewell to his home Grand Slam.
Reflecting on the match, Sinner expressed, “It’s obviously a very special place for me to play against Richard. We played last year too. It’s very tough but I’m happy to be in the third round.” He also acknowledged their relationship off the court, recognizing the generational difference and commending Gasquet on his momentous career, extending his congratulations and admiration.
