Internationally acclaimed Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili returns to Hong Kong for spectacular performances

    11th April 2024 – (Hong Kong) The highly acclaimed Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili is making a triumphant return to Hong Kong after a nine-year hiatus. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has extended a special invitation to the renowned dance troupe to perform at the Sha Tin Town Hall on 31st May and 1st June (Friday and Saturday). The audience can expect to be mesmerised by the dancers’ stunning traditional folk costumes and their extraordinary blend of classical and contemporary dance techniques, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Georgia.

    Georgian dance is renowned for its distinctive characteristics. Male dancers will captivate the audience with their intricate movements, including point works, fast-paced spins, squat jumps, and powerful stomps, all performed with dexterity and fierce passion. In contrast, the female dancers will grace the stage with their soft and elegant movements, characterized by graceful glides and refined hand gestures. This harmonious combination of strength and delicateness promises to create a mesmerizing performance. The choreography seamlessly merges traditional Georgian dance with modern elements, featuring captivating competitions between dancers, meticulously crafted formations, enchanting stage lighting effects, exquisite costumes, and vibrant live folk music. Audiences will undoubtedly be enthralled by the passionate and captivating charm of the Georgian people, both in their traditional roots and innovative expressions.

    Founded in 1945 by eminent dancers Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili, the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili holds the distinction of being the first professional national dance company in Georgia. Their mission is to preserve the traditions of Georgian folk dance. Continuing the family’s artistic vision, Iliko Sukhishvili Jr and Nino Sukhishvili, third-generation family members, have incorporated folk, classical, and modern elements into their choreography, presenting the diverse facets of Georgian culture to audiences around the world. The company has received immense acclaim and has performed in nearly 100 countries, dazzling audiences with over 10,000 performances.

    The performances by the Georgian National Dance Company Sukhishvili will take place at the Auditorium of Sha Tin Town Hall at 8pm on 31st May and 1st June .     Additionally, a dance workshop will be held at 11am on 1st June at the Podium Workshop of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Led by the company’s chief choreographer Iliko Sukhishvili Jr and accompanied by the dancers, the workshop will introduce participants to the basic movements of Georgian folk dancing. The workshop, conducted in Russian with English interpretation, will also feature captivating musical performances by the company’s musicians, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the unique rhythms of Georgian music.
