22nd February 2024 – (Miami) In their season opener, Inter Miami secured a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake, thanks to goals from Robert Taylor and Diego Gomez. Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez provided the assists during the match, although there is still room for improvement. The first goal came as a result of a mistake from Real Salt Lake’s goalkeeper, Zack MacMath, while the second showcased a beautifully executed build-up play with threaded passes.

Real Salt Lake demonstrated their preparedness by employing a creative set play defence to contain Messi, resulting in a crucial block by Justen Glad in the box, preventing Miami from taking an early lead. However, Real Salt Lake’s conservative approach in the first half limited their offensive potential. Miami’s midfield giveaways created opportunities for their opponents, but against stronger teams in the league, Miami might have conceded multiple goals, which is a concern for coach Tata Martino. The team struggled with pace and now faces a quick turnaround as they prepare to face the LA Galaxy on Sunday, with Messi and Suarez having completed a full 90 minutes of play.

For Real Salt Lake, it was a missed opportunity. They managed to keep up with Miami for most of the match but fell short when it truly mattered. While there may be some moral victories to take from the game, it is crucial for them to capitalise on scoring opportunities. In their next encounter, if Cristian Arango is presented with five chances, it will be imperative for at least one of them to find the back of the net in order for Real Salt Lake to salvage a positive result.
