8th February 2023 – (Macao) 48-year-old Alvin Chau, founder and chairman of Macao’s Suncity Group was arrested by the Macau Judicial Police on suspicion of operating a casino in China in 2021. He was involved in establishing a criminal syndicate, illegally operating gambling, fraud and money laundering activities amounting to a total of 289 crimes. The judge on 18th January 2023 found Chau guilty for establishing and leading a criminal syndicate, illegally operated gambling business, and committed fraud. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison. Meanwhile, Chau was acquitted of aggravated money laundering charges.
The Macao media quoted multiple sources as reporting that Chau and other defendants had appealed to Court Of Second Instance and the Procuratorate also appealed against the verdict.
