Improper operation during testing leads to 1 fatality and 2 injuries on Xi’an Metro construction site, officials report


21st April 2024 – (Xi’an) During an incident that occurred during a late-night testing session last Thursday (18th), the ongoing construction of Xi’an Metro Line 10 experienced a mishap, prompting the involvement of multiple departments. Local authorities released an official statement in the early hours of Sunday (21st), revealing the unfortunate outcome of the accident: one person lost their life, and two others sustained injuries.

According to the notification from the Xi’an Municipal Committee of Work Safety, the incident took place on 18th Aprl, 2024, at approximately 11.50pm while conducting a test run on the designated route and vehicle type for Xi’an Metro Line 10. The accident resulted from improper operation by debugging personnel from the manufacturing company, leading to a collision between two vehicles. Tragically, one member of the testing team lost their life, while two others suffered injuries.

The notification classified the incident as an accident arising from occupational safety and production responsibility. Following the occurrence, the Xi’an Municipal Government promptly established an accident investigation team to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter. The Xi’an Municipal Committee of Work Safety has urged the Xi’an Rail Transit Group to enhance safety coordination and management. Additionally, Xi’an CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., the company responsible for vehicle debugging, has been instructed to fulfil its primary responsibilities, standardize operational procedures, learn from this incident, and take necessary measures to prevent its recurrence.

Xi’an Metro Line 10, which commenced construction on 1st July, 2020, encompasses a first-phase project spanning approximately 34.418 kilometres, with a design maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour. It is expected to meet the initial operational requirements by September 2024.
