15th September 2023 – (Washington) In response to the recent indictment of Hunter Biden on charges related to gun possession, his lead defence attorney, Abbe Lowell, released a series of documents to three congressional committees. Alongside the materials, Lowell included a cover letter criticising the three Republican committee chairs who have been investigating the Biden family. POLITICO obtained the letter and is publishing its contents.
Lowell begins the letter by asserting that the lawmakers’ primary focus is to manipulate public support for the 2024 election rather than conducting genuine oversight. He further suggests that Hunter Biden’s indictment was a direct consequence of their political pressure.
The attorney writes, “Your blatant efforts achieved your goal as the U.S. Attorney in Delaware today filed gun charges against our client – charges that are unprecedented when not part of some other criminal conduct and have been found unconstitutional by a federal court of appeals – and who reversed his earlier decision that such charges were not warranted. Your improper interference now affecting a federal prosecutor is a much greater threat to society than the 11 days that Mr. Biden possessed an unloaded gun.”
This letter represents a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the president’s son and Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill, who have made Hunter Biden a focal point of their recently-announced impeachment inquiry targeting President Biden.
Furthermore, the letter accuses the committee’s witnesses of violating federal laws safeguarding grand jury and tax information. It also alleges that Republicans have misused their investigation to publicize protected tax information about Hunter Biden.
Tristan Leavitt, an attorney from the nonprofit organisation Empower Oversight, who represents one of the IRS whistleblowers, defended his client in a statement and dismissed Hunter Biden’s attorneys’ arguments and stated, “Here we go again. Hunter Biden’s attorneys have already made this argument to Judge [Maryellen] Noreika, who reviewed the whistleblower materials and rejected defence counsel’s baseless allegations.”
As of now, there has been no response from the spokespersons of the Republican committee chairs or from Hunter Biden’s legal team.
