Hundreds of protesters gather at Chater Garden to call for democracy, police suspend the assembly after rioters cause ruckus


19th January 2020 – (Hong Kong) At around 2pm today, a few hundred protesters gathered at Chater Garden in Central to attend a public event organised by Hong Kong Civil Assembly Team to call for democracy. The rally was rejected by police and the protesters were only allowed to gather at Charter Garden and Chater Road. The letter of no objection was issued to the organiser between 2pm to 10pm today.

Riot police were seen on standby on Bank Street to conduct body search on suspects. Many of them were also seen near the High Court in Admiralty and Exit K of Central MTR Station.

Police officers were surrounded by rioters who threw water bottles and other objects at them. In addition, the rioters built barricades with railings, traffic cones and umbrellas in the vicinity of Des Voeux Road Central and Ice House Street. They threw bricks onto the roads; some threw paint bombs and defaced the exteriors of the buildings in the area.

 In view of the violence, Police officers have asked the organiser to suspend the public meeting in Chater Garden, Central and urged the participants to head towards Admiralty and leave the area by public transport.
