Housing society receives 99% of “well-off tenants policies” declaration forms, 10 households with excessive income required to surrender units

19th June 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) has recently extended the scope of its “Well-off Tenants Policies,” issuing nearly 2,000 declaration forms to eligible residents since April. As of now, approximately 99% of the forms have been collected, with 10 households voluntarily surrendering their units due to exceeding income limits, among other reasons. Additionally, two households have disclosed residential properties in their declarations and have already returned their units and relocated.

Stanford Poon, the Director of Property Management at HKHS, revealed in a radio program this morning (19th) that while they received around 85 reports throughout the previous year, the number has already surpassed 150 reports in the first five months of this year, nearly doubling the previous year’s figure. Poon anticipates a rapid increase in report numbers. Upon receiving reports, the HKHS conducts investigations to ascertain whether the involved tenants have violated their lease agreements.

Poon emphasised that the HKHS remains committed to combating the misuse of public housing without any leniency. Their objective is to ensure the efficient allocation of public housing resources to those genuinely in need.
