22nd April 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Department of Health’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) in Hong Kong is currently investigating a critical case of influenza A in a young child, reported today. The authorities are also issuing a call for increased public vigilance and timely vaccination against the seasonal flu.

The patient, a previously healthy six-year-old girl, began exhibiting symptoms such as fever and cough on 19th April. After her condition deteriorated, she was taken to Union Hospital on 20th April. Later that day, due to an escalation in her symptoms, she was transferred to the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital and subsequently admitted to their paediatric intensive care unit. That evening, she was moved to the intensive care unit at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital for further treatment.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of the influenza A (H1) virus in her respiratory specimens. The clinical team has diagnosed her with a severe influenza A infection, complicated by encephalopathy, and she remains in critical condition.
