5th March 2025 – (Hong Kong) A Hong Kong man living in the U.K. has taken to social media to voice his disappointment regarding his decision to relocate, citing two significant challenges that have left him feeling despondent and contemplating a return to Hong Kong. Originally planning to apply for British citizenship, he expressed feelings of hopelessness, asking for advice from fellow users, “Is there anyone who can give me some advice? I’m feeling quite desperate.”
His post sparked considerable discussion online, with responses varying from calls to return home to reassurances about persevering through difficult times. Some netizens suggested that if he was unhappy, he should simply leave, while others pointed out the increasing cost of living and stagnant wages in the U.K., arguing that remaining there may not be worthwhile.
The individual, currently a second-year university student in England, struggles with his studies due to a weak foundation in English. He described his academic experience as challenging, stating, “I am finding it very difficult to keep up; my grades are barely second lower and I have to spend hours just to understand a single source for my essays.”
Pursuing a degree in History and Politics, he mentioned that the complexity of primary source materials often overwhelms him. He is now considering transferring to Hong Kong Baptist University through a non-JUPAS application, hoping to move up to the third year. However, he fears that his previous academic performance might hinder his chances.
Initially, he had aspirations of returning to Hong Kong to teach after obtaining his citizenship but is now worried that his academic struggles may affect his future career. His plea for guidance underscored his feelings of despair.
The online community reacted with a mix of support and criticism. While some agreed with his intention to return to Hong Kong, others urged him to stay and overcome his challenges, emphasising that difficulties are part of life. Some commenters cautioned that returning home might not guarantee an easier path, suggesting that he should focus on improving his English and making the most of his time abroad.
In response to the feedback, he asserted that his English has improved significantly since arriving in the U.K., but he remains concerned about his academic performance affecting his future. He stressed that his reluctance to continue is not due to a lack of desire to learn, but rather a fear of wasting time on low grades.
