Hong Kong braces for inclement weather as Easterly airstream influences region

19th May 2024 – (Hong Kong) The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a forecast indicating several days of unsettled weather for Hong Kong and the broader Guangdong coast due to an easterly airstream. This weather system is currently influencing the region, bringing with it moderate to heavy showers and the potential for squally thunderstorms.

Today, residents can expect mainly cloudy skies with sporadic showers, which are predicted to intensify into heavier, squally thunderstorms as the day progresses. The Observatory has also noted that winds will range from moderate to fresh, originating from the east to southeast. These winds are expected to strengthen, particularly offshore and in elevated areas.

The outlook for the coming days remains challenging. Tuesday will see a continuation of the showers, but with a gradual reduction in intensity expected towards the middle of the week. However, a trough of low pressure is developing and will likely exacerbate the weather situation by bringing more heavy showers and thunderstorms to the southern coast of China in the upcoming days.
