Hong Kong athletes honoured following successful return from the 4th Asian Para Games

13th November 2023 – (Hong Kong) A welcome home reception was held today at Ma On Shan Sports Centre, Sha Tin, to celebrate the Hong Kong, China Delegation’s commendable performance at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou. The event was jointly hosted by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee.

The Chief Executive, Mr John Lee, presided over the ceremony and presented certificates of commendation to the returning athletes in acknowledgement of their outstanding performances and hard work.

In his address, Mr Lee praised the athletes for their exceptional achievements at the Asian Para Games. He attributed their success not only to their individual dedication and effort but also to the effective resource allocation by the government for sports development, with particular emphasis on providing additional resources for the development of sports for persons with disabilities.

The 4th Asian Para Games took place in Hangzhou from October 22 to 28, with a delegation of 95 Hong Kong athletes participating in 11 competition events. These included boccia, archery, athletics, badminton, lawn bowls, rowing, swimming, table tennis, shooting, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair fencing, and wheelchair tennis.

After intense competition, the Hong Kong Delegation secured a total of 47 medals, comprising eight gold, 15 silver, and 24 bronze. This performance placed them 10th out of the 33 medal-winning countries or regions.

The ceremony was also attended by several high-ranking officials, including the President of the China Hong Kong Paralympic Committee, Mrs Jenny Fung; the Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Kevin Yeung; the Under Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Mr Raistlin Lau; the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Vincent Liu; the Commissioner for Sports, Mr Sam Wong; and the Deputy Director of Leisure and Cultural Services (Leisure Services), Miss Winnie Chui.
